Clinics for Recertifying Referees

11/29/08

By Dean Barton

Every official needs to recertify annually. You should select a clinic based on your referee grade and experience level. Please review the recertification description that best describes your referee grade in 2008

Grade 9 Referee - If you were a registered Grade 9 referee in 2008, you have three choices to recertify in 2009:

  • Bridge course is the recommended course for all returning Grade 9 officials. It is a nine hour course that reviews the Laws of the Game. Participants who successfully complete the course advance from a Grade 9 to Grade 8 certification
  • Grade 8 Entry course is an option for returning Grade 9 officials. This is a 16 hour course that meets the requirement to advance from a Grade 9 to a Grade 8 certification
  • Grade 9 Entry course - This is the least recommended option.  If 2008 was your first year as a Grade 9 official, you can chose to retake the nine hour Grade 9 entry level course in 2009. This option is only open to referees that certified for the first time as a Grade 9 referee in 2008.

All referees who were Grade 8 or higher in 2008 are required to take their recertification exam on line in 2009* Tests must be completed at least 48 hours in advance of the clinic date. Tests for recertification purposes will not be administered at clinic sites.

* Waivers to the testing requirements must be received in writing from the SDRI

Grade 8 Referee with three or less years referee experience - The recommended recertification course for this level of referee is the Entry level recertification course (R<3). The focus is a thorough review of the Laws of the Game along with identifying issues often associated with new referees.  Course is 5 hours of classroom

Referee with more than three years experience -

  • Grade 7 and Grade 8 referees with at least three years experience may take the Intermediate (R>3) or the Advanced (R-ADV) recertification course to fulfill their requirements in 2009
  • Emeritus, Grade 6 and Grade 5 referees must complete an Advanced Recertification course and pass the State level test to meet their recertification requirements in 2009
  • Referees desiring to upgrade must take the recertification course designated for their current grade and must complete all additional training requirements established by USSF and the MN SDRI. Testing for upgrade purposes will be administered at the clinic site.

The ability to sign up for a recertification clinic will be turned off on Friday morning, ONE WEEK BEFORE the clinic date. This is to allow adequate time for all participants to receive the test invitation and to pass the exam by the Wednesday prior to the clinic.  Late registrations and walk ups will not be accepted.
